The days of IPv6 as a simple research network are over. With the efforts of government
and mass media, the future need for IPv6 has become widely recognized. Considering
the present as the first stage of IPv6 commercial introduction, it can be expected
that the rate of deployment will continue at a stable pace until reaching a critical
mass.
IPv6 is a technology holding the potential for an extremely wide reaching influence.
Possibly for this reason, a number of corporations are now taking measures to
introduce IPv6. Having said this, success scenarios for this deployment seem limited
to the actual number of companies introducing IPv6. To restate this, the long
term merits of IPv6 are without doubt dependent on its continued advancement and
deployment while short term merits remain somewhat unclear.
Internationally, the faces of industry and government and the deployment scenarios
under consideration in each country are considerably different.
This session will address the following questions:
- what deployment scenarios do you foresee?
- where is the breakthrough point? what will drive this?
- how do you consider cost factors?
- what is the key to deployment outside Japan?
There is no need to reach a consensus on potential deployment scenarios. More
importantly, the panel strives to introduce varied viewpoints in providing a reference
to Summit attendees in considering IPv6 deployment.

This panel will look at an attractive IPv6 applications area - Home Networks and
Home Appliances. We will focus on currently available commercial services and
upcoming technical challenges.
The panel will open by sharing a detailed "story." For example, "having your grandmother
access your digital camera from her home to look at photos you have taken" or
"setting your video/HDD with your cell phone to record a program while you are
out."
The introduction will be followed by a comprehensive discussion of the technologies
employed in realizing the introduced "story". Technical experts will reflect on
the challenges overcome in providing currently available commercial services.
Technology currently in the development stage or under consideration will provide
the basis for a discussion of possibilities for the future.
Having addressed progress and potential from a technical perspective, the panel
will close by debating business prospects and developments for IPv6 Home Networks
and Appliances.

This panel will survey the views of representatives of business (corporate, venture,
investment), government and education on the development prospects for Japan's
information industry.
Varied perspectives on the challenges facing the widespread commercial deployment
of IPv6 will be presented together with proposals on overcoming those challenges
and developing viable business ventures.
With IPv6 as a keyword, we will look at Japan's current economic crisis, in particular
the present IT industry depression, pinpointing the individual roles of business,
government and education in easing the present situation. Looking forward, the
panel will offer a view of business, government and education as one, sharing
a common direction toward the cultivation of new business, the development of
new applications and the establishment of a next generation information industry.
